Band/artist history
The Turnstyles A.K.A. originated out of the the SKA/Punk movement of the mid-90's. My first introduction to 3rd wave SKA music was when my friend played me his Fishbone CD. For me, it was love at first listen. He also got me listening to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and The Specials. After hearing the song "Ghost Town" for the first time I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to be in a SKA band. The Turnstyles A.K.A. formed in the summer of '94. After going to 2 studios we finally found a home at KHStudio. Our first album "Above Ground in Suburbia" was released in '98. After that some big things happened for us such as playing at the Camden E-Centre opening for the band LIVE. We also hooked up with the booking agency Shore Bets out of Philadelphia. For the next few years we played many a cover show to help fund the production of our newest CD. As time went on I began to feel that the rigorous schedule of playing cover shows five nights a week sapped me of the energy for what I really wanted to do. Write and record original music. So me and the other guys parted ways. Ray, Ducky and John still play with the group Drop Dead Sexy. I spent the last year trying to re-organize my life and record new music.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We are not currently playing out but have played numerous shows from Boston to DC and throughout Pennsylvania.
Your musical influences
Fishbone, Less Than Jake, Catch-22, Skankin' Pickle, Mu330, Rx Bandits, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Toasters, Ruder Than You, The Scofflaws, Mephiskapheles, Reel Big Fish, Sublime, Toasters, English Beat
What equipment do you use?
For most of the songs recorded here a fender hot rod deluxe amp was used. Live I use a tweed deville with a strat or my Les paul unfinished studio. Some of the heavier songs, recorded and otherwise, I use a Marshall 2000 tube amp through either a 2 or 4 twelve cab usually with my Les sometimes a strat. Pedals-modded boss OD, Fuzz face, Wah, Phase 90, Boss multi efx, Univibe, Whammy all kinds of stuff. Some of the Bass was done with an Ernie Ball Stingray.
