I'm Mimi. 16 years old at the time. I rap, make beats, and play games.
I started making music earnestly toward the latter end of 9th grade. I was going through it in 2019, but I was able to distract myself with making this art. I grew a lot that year, and I figured I'd drop a rap project so I could vent while also showing my friends what I was capable of. I also needed a reason to keep living. The EP was just one of the goals I set to keep me from giving up on life. After I dropped it in 2020, everything fell into place; most of what was wrong with my life went away. I couldn't be happier right now.
No. I don't know how I'd be able to do that. I'll get over my social anxiety eventually, though. I could probably call my uncle and he'd be able to get me at a show. That, or I could find some open mic event.
Kanye West is my favorite artist of all time. Everything about his music is breathtaking. He makes shit sound good. His story's inspiring, too. I like it when artists come from humble beginnings. I'm broke as hell right now, and I've been through a lot since 2006 when a chain reaction was set off in my family. So I look up to people who came from trash environments and were still able to keep a level head, get it out the mud, and make good ass music, too. A few members of BROCKHAMPTON come to mind. Kendrick Lamar, Roddy Ricch, Logic, 21 Savage, all of them. As far as production goes, of course Kanye is a great inspiration, but Nujabes and Dilla are important, too. I aspire to make my beats sound like that. Speck and Enoch of CYNE are also great producers. CYNE as a whole is inspiring simply because of the messages Akin and Cise Starr put in the music. That, and the fact that they're not signed a large, soul-eating label. That's also why I admire KOTA the Friend and Chance the Rapper. Especially KOTA. The dude releases all of his shit through DistroKid. Legendary. He also just seems like a nice dude. If I ever blow up, I'd like to keep my personality.
I use my 4GB RAM PC to make beats. Cakewalk is my chief DAW. It's free and fully capable of making whatever I want to make. I use a variety of audio output devices; cheap earbuds, my uncle's Sony headphones, computer speakers, my phone speakers; anything I can test the mix on, I will. Right now, I use my phone to record my verses. I do my best to make it sound alright.
I really just want to meet someone in the area like me. Someone my age with the same vision and some of the same interests. I've met them all on Discord and Twitter, but it's not the same, man. My school is so trash.
