David Heitler-Klevans is one-half of Two of a Kind, a husband-wife duo based in the Philadelphia area. Two of a Kind does eclectic folk/singer-songwriter material for adults and interactive music for children and families, all with an emphasis on social issues and fun.
Two of a Kind is an award-winning, nationally touring, husband-wife duo from Philadelphia, specializing in interactive music for children and eclectic folk music for adults. David and Jenny Heitler-Klevans have been singing together since 1987. Their energetic, participatory performances are enjoyed by kids and adults alike. Two of a Kind helps audiences of all ages feel that they can create music and that they can make a difference in the world.
Two of a Kinds repertoire for adults includes a rich mix of original songs along with well-chosen covers and traditional songs. Their lyrics reflect their commitment to making the world a better place, combining the personal with the political, all the while retaining a sense of humour and fun. A Two of a Kind concert is a heady mix of personal and political songs, songs of love and lament, songs that will touch and tickle even the most jaded music lover. (Frank D. David and Jenny are active in the Peoples Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle, the Children's Music Network, and the Philadelphia Folksong Society, and are members of AFM Locals 77 (Philadelphia) and 1000 (the North American Traveling Musicians Union). Jenny was a member of the Anna Crusis Women's Choir for four years and sang on the group's recording Fresh Cut.
Two of a Kind has six recordings to their credit, including five recordings for
children:Patchwork Planet, Going on an Adventure, Connections, Friends and Love Makes a Family, as well as Live Each Moment, their recording for adults. Patchwork Planet won two 2002 Childrens Music Web Awards. Going on an Adventure and Connections both won 1999 Parents Choice Silver Honors, Going on an Adventure also won two 2003 Childrens Music Web Awards for Classic Recording for Preschoolers and Classic Recording for Young Children, and Connections also won Best Music for Older Children in the Childrens Music Web Awards (childrensmusic.org). David and Jenny have also produced their own two of a kind: twin sons named Ari and Jason born in January 1995!
Two of a Kind has appeared at festivals, folk clubs, schools, libraries, aquariums, zoos, museums, daycare centers, camps, and on radio and television. They have shared the stage with artists such as Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary, Trout Fishing in America, Kim & Reggie Harris, disappear fear, Sally Rogers, Magpie, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Charlie King, Si Kahn and Ruth Pelham.
We play live - all over the US, but primarily in the Midatlantic region.
