A couple of years ago I was working on a contract with a local company when they suddenly terminated the contract without warning. I was told it had nothing to do with my performance, but it left me pretty upset.
I started to descend into a funk but decided to struggle against that easy end. One day while driving down to visit a friend on a cold and snowy day, the clouds parted and the brilliant sun smiled down on me, lighting up the nearly frozen lake I was passing and the glittering snow on the hills.
This suddenly inspired the first words of the chorus:
"Sunlight’s the best disinfectant
Cures the lost with the expectant"
A few moments later I realized that "The sun always shines after the flood", a perfect metaphor for where I was emotionally. I pulled over, wrote down the lyrics, and turned around and drove home. I wrote and recorded the song, beginning to end in less than 8 hours.
Don Paul Moore lent his fantastic lead guitar work to the song, and I think it's a pretty darn good composition.
The Sun Always Shines After the Flood

Sunlight’s the best disinfectant
Cures the lost with the expectant
Oh Lord let the sun shine down on me
Matters not how the winds blow
Scatters fear to make a rainbow
Oh Lord let the sun shine down on me
Although I bear a thorny crown
I won’t let the pain get me down
I’ll let the rain wash away the blood
And wait for the sunshine to come out after the flood
The sun always shines after the flood
Chorus
I watch the snow melt on the lake
While dead leaves blow and cold trees shake
They’re waiting for the spring to bud
Patiently waiting for the sunshine after the flood
The sun always shines after the flood
Chorus
I’d rather a sun burn than pale skin
Open the blinds to let the sun in
Oh Lord let the sun shine in on me
If it gets too hot I’ll find me a shade tree
Count all the leaves the birds and busy bees
Oh Lord let the sun shine down on me
Oh Lord let the sun shine down on me
Oh Lord let the sun shine down on me
Oh Lord let the sun shine down on me
