Story behind the song
Do you ever have those times when there are many things going on in the world that concern you whether on a global, national, local or familial scale - or all of the above? Sometimes this results in a vague sense of unease and burden on our souls - like a cloud hanging over our heads we can't seem to shake off.
I was feeling that way one day as I drove home from grocery shopping and decided to just sing my thoughts out loud. But not knowing exactly what to say, I just spoke to Jesus, "Why do I feel burdened? What weighs on my soul?" There are so many reasons to praise, but sometimes in order to get there, you first need to re-release your burdens at the feet of our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and... Prince of Peace.
Lyrics
Why do I feel burdened?
Why downcast, my soul
When my faith is certain
And my hope is sure?
Daily cares and disappointment
Drive me to my knees
Why do I feel burdened
Prince of Peace?
When I feel forgotten
When I walk alone
Bear my every burden
Turn me to your throne
Daily cares and disappointment
Drive me to my knees
Why do I feel burdened
Prince of Peace?
Oh take away fear
And wrap me in comfort
Turn sorrow to joy in my soul
You feel every pain
You know why my hearts hurts
In suffering Your Spirit consoles
When the world is shaken
Stay my solid ground
When the dark awakens
To Your Truth I'm bound
Daily cares and disappointment
Drive me to my knees
Why do I feel burdened
Prince of Peace?
Oh, hear my hearts cry
My refuge, my shelter
Reach down through the darkening clouds
The shadows of earth
You thwart and You conquer
Your faithful love saves and surrounds
When my race is finished
And I close my eyes
To the joys of Heaven
Wake me, make me rise
Daily cares and disappointment
Pale in place of these
Hold me now in wholeness
Prince of Peace
Gone are fear and isolation
God is all in all
Sovereign sympathizer
Savior, Balm
