Story behind the song
Solstice, Winter or Summer, is the time to acknowledge the Holly and Oak Kings. They are the Greenman! They are always there, always serving the greater good of life. The Greenman song was written for Tim Tatman, a teacher and leader of the Greenman movement in Oklahoma. The Greenman group, (like the Holly King and the Oak King), always made sure the people at our events were safe and our Circles were guarded. Tim’s Greenman group was always there, quietly tending the needs and safety of the folk at the events behind the scenes. Most of the time, we (the attendees of the events) didn’t know anything about the hard work, sacrifice and gentle care the people of the Greenman group gave as service to the group. We did enjoy the benefits of their work though. I wrote this song in appreciation and gratitude for the wonderful Gift and of the feeling of security comfort and care that the Greenman group gave to all of us at the events. In my travels around this Pagan World, I’ve found that different regions have different names for the people who serve the Greater group in this way, be it ‘Security’, ‘Dragons’, or ‘Greenman’, they all serve to keep the rest of us safe and secure, and they all do it without banging a drum or demanding attention and recognition! Thank you, Greenman across this land… for all You do for us! The Greenman song is a surprise hidden track at the end of The Golden Section Cd. In the spirit of sharing the joys of the season I offer The Greenman by Michelle Mays for your enjoyment. Thank you for listening! Bob Reeder has been an inspiration to me as well. Lyrics
The Greenman Someone’s standing on the edge of the Circle gathered round Who is this Man Guarding us on Sacred Ground? Quietly he provides and protects without a sound And to this purpose, his oath is honor bound. With Stealth and strength he guards unnoticed on the edge Providing for and keeping safe our kith and kin. No fanfare, no noise does he make. Someone’s standing on the edge of the Circle gathered round. Who is this Man guarding us on Sacred Ground? Quietly he provides and protects without a sound. The Green Man, Guardian of our land. Outside looking in inside looking out, No one knows the subtle things he does, Yet through his work we’re all safe and secure. Someone’s standing at the edge of the Circle gathered round, Who is this man guarding us o Sacred ground? Quietly he provides and protects without a sound. And to this purpose his oath is honor bound. Freely given freely received, he honors Mother’s ways And now in turn we honor our Green Man. Who Guards so well the Heart of this land. Somewhere, right now A Greenman’s standing near, Whether here at home or on some far off land He keeps safe, all we hold dear. Someone’s standing at the edge of the Circle gathered round. Who is this man guarding us on sacred ground? Quietly he provides and protects without a sound, The Green Man, Guardian of our Sacred Space, The Green Man, Guardian of this Land.
