Story behind the song
Abelardo and I had been working together on a project before, but for some reasons the Project never got finished. I think it was pretty late already as I asked Abe on MSN if he would be up for doing some programming at my place. Taking into account how late it already was I did now really expect him to say yes this time but the more surprised I was as he sat that he just started to write a song and that he would really like me to produce it. The decision was done: “No sleep this night”; and this was only the first one. This was the first song that Abe had written and was done for the purpose of a Songwriting assignment at LIPA. The evening we first met Abe brought a couple of wave files, including some basic Guitar recordings he made and some drum loops, for showing me the direction where he wanted to go with the production. The programming started with doing a basic house beat including percussions to give the production a foundation. The next step was to record the two Guitar tracks again and cutting them up at some parts. With the assistance of Abe I started programming the Bass-line, the Organ and the Electric Piano, while Abe provided me with the Chords. For me this kind of working was a complete new experience, in combining my own ideas with the direction Abe wanted the song to go. After the Basic arrangement was done and Abe had finished with writing the Lyrics, we met with Catalina to record the Vocal line and the harmonies. With Catalina’s and our perfectionism this took a bit longer then we had expected, but therefore we had pretty decent takes at the end of the day. After I had done a basic mix with the Vocals we kind of stopped working on the Song and Abe handed the recording in, because it was more assessed on the Songwriting then on the production. After we did not have a deadline anymore and had to concentrate on some other assessments we stopped working on the song anymore. Just after the term was over and we were about to leave Liverpool for a while we sit down again and made a final mix and mastering. At this place I have to mention my friend Anselm, who gave me a very important tip, as I came to a point where I did not know where to go with the mix. Abelardo wrote about the production:
This is the first song I’ve written completely by myself. I had to write it for a songwriting class. It was a great experience being that I don’t have much practice in this area. Working with David as a producer was amazing. I got my ideas through to him perfectly and his input was crucial to the song. We had several sessions where we spent the whole night programming and arranging. It is a very bizarre feeling walking home at 10 in the morning when everyone is up and working and I am just going to sleep. Countless cups of coffee and several pasta plates later the song was complete.
