Story behind the song
'Golden Slumbers' comes from Elizabethan playwright Thomas Dekker (1570-1641). It first appeared in the play 'The Pleasant Comedy of Patient Grissill (1603)'. Paul McCartney came to the Golden Slumbers lyrics in a sheet music book at his father's house and it was put around that he made up his owne music since he could not read the music in the Booke. My version here is an alternative to the Beatles and is clearly in the public domain. The sheet music for my a version of this song is something that I copied at Ottawa U. in around 1981 and I did not note down where it came from. The sheet music does come from a series of song books (titled by colours) that was published around 1910 (give or take 30 years). It may have been called something like 'The Gray Book of Songs' and it may have been published by the University Of Toronto. The lyrics are a bit different from the original 400 year old ones and I do not know how faithful my source is to the music of 400 years ago.
Lyrics
I Will Sing A Lullaby (Golden Slumbers) 17th Century English Cradle Song - By Thomas Dekker from - Pleasant Comedy of Patient Grissill (1603) by Thomas Dekker Golden slumber kiss your eyes, Smiles await you when you rise. Sleep, pretty lov'd ones, Do not cry, And I will sing a lullaby, Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby. Care is heavy, therefore sleep, Father here safe watch will keep. Sleep, pretty lov'd ones, Do not cry, And I will sing a lullaby, Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby.
