Ol' Jimmy Marshall found it on the ground Up by Sutter's Mill and there's enough to go around So I'm going to California going to San Francisco Bay Up to Sacramento there's gold there they say Word is out and running wild spreading like a fire I don't believe I've heard a word to cause so much desire They're coming from the north from the south from the east Come from every walk of life from sinner-man to priest There's sailors jumping ship farmers leaving land Bankers and gamblers both leaving debts to stand Seems like every mother's son is heading for the west That fever burning up inside won't let a poor boy rest Soon there'll be a city where once was just a town 'cause ol' Jimmy Marshall found it on the ground
