Back Home In Tennessee

We've spilled our share of blood on desert soil
And you're well within your right to blame it on the oil
Though I guess it's hard for you to understand
What our lives are like out here in the sand
It'll be another year before I leave
And it's so hot at times I can barely breathe
The people here have all been good to me
Just like the folks back home in Tennessee
I'm just a simple Chattanooga boy
Enlisted out of high school, eager to deploy
And before I knew it I was on a plane
Overcome by a steady stream of rain
When we took off I heard an awful roar
But it's not as though I've ever flown before
And out the window I could plainly see
That clear blue sky back home in Tennessee
Each time I hear a rocket overhead
I can't help but think that somewhere, someone's dead
I write emails home that I never send
And deep inside, I wish this war would end
I lost a friend about a month ago
It messed me up but I never let it show
I'm glad the people here are living free
But I miss my life back home in Tennessee
I'm afraid to get to close to anyone
My best friends are my music and my gun
It's a lonely place when the lights go down
I've lost my way and it's nowhere to be found
It's hard to know who and what to trust
When a caravan of strangers emerges from the dust
But when the Lord decides to call for me
Please bury me back home in Tennessee
Yeah, please bury me back home in Tennessee
